How to use Reorder

Updated over a year ago

Once you’ve improved your sentences, the second step of the editing process is to assess the flow and structure of your paragraphs.

Organize your sentences into proper sequence within each paragraph. Make sure your arguments are coherent, well-structured, and that there are no unnecessary sentences.

Then look at the paragraphs - are they properly placed? Each paragraph should be a stepping stone to your essay’s final destination.

Essay’s Reorder tool allows you to easily drag and drop sentences and paragraphs into a new order. Evaluate the structure of each paragraph, and every element of your work to make sure your arguments flow optimally.

How to use Reorder

  • Navigate to Reorder.

  • Reorder tool has two views: Sentence view and Paragraph view

    • You can switch between them by clicking the button on the left side of the Reorder toolbar.

Sentence view

  • Sentence view shows you each of your sentences displayed on its own line within its paragraph section.

Reorder your sentences

  • In the Reorder tool, start by looking at the order of the sentences within each paragraph.

  • Experiment with the structure of your paragraphs to make sure your sentences are in the most optimal order.

    • Your paragraphs should be like a mini essay: they should be able to stand on their own as a collection of thoughts devoted to one point, with an opening sentence that is a transition from the previous paragraph, and closing sentence that is a transition to the next paragraph.

  • Each sentence can be reordered by dragging and dropping it into place.

    • You can drag a sentence to move it into a new position in its current paragraph.

    • You can drag a sentence to move it into another paragraph.

    • You can also drag a sentence between two paragraph sections to create a new paragraph in your essay containing just that sentence.

    • The drag indicator makes it easy to visualize exactly where you are placing your sentence.

    • You can press esc to cancel your drag and return the item to its original location.

It can be really slow to drag your sentences from the top of your essay to the bottom. With the drag handle, you can select your sentence(s), scroll to the paragraph you want to move your sentences to, and then drag the drag handle to position your selected sentences into place.
